SWIMMING: HOW IT CAN RELIEVE BACK PAIN

November 30th, 2015 | 1 min. read

By Coastal Orthopedics

In our last blog, we explored the ways that swimming can cause back pain. Often, it was from doing front strokes incorrectly. More often, swimming is a great way to exercise because it is so low-impact. Many people turn to swimming when recovering from back injuries or issues.

Swimming is a great way to get exercise and relieve back pain because it is low-impact. It allows you to build muscle mass in your back and core and strengthen your cardiovascular system without pounding your joints. As an orthopedic center, we love swimming!

At your appointment with Coastal Orthopedics in Corpus Christi, swimming is a great topic to discuss. Depending on how your back is doing, you may be cleared to swim. If you are good to swim, here are some great tips to keep in mind:

  • Make sure your technique is good. Work with a trainer or coach for a little while if you have to.
  • Starting with the breaststroke is probably the best, because it involves less trunk rotation than the butterfly or freestyle strokes.
  • Begin gradually. This may mean something like swimming twice a week and then slowly progressing over four to six weeks. Studies show that those who swim at least twice a week experience much more back improvement after six months.

Coastal Orthopedics is proud to be Corpus Christi’s experienced orthopedic center. We are passionate about getting people moving again and transforming their lives with pain relief. Contact us to learn more and make an appointment today!
